Bedford Prison

Bedford Prison is a Category B prison holding over 500 prisoners based in Bedfordshire. Its run as part of the HMPPS and holds men of 18 years and over.  

It was built in 1801 and extended in 1849 and in 1990 a new house block, health care centre and new gate lodge were added.

Prisoners convicted and sentenced in Luton, St Albans, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire normally end up in Bedford Prison.

Bedford Prison is seen as overcrowded by 166% according to the Howardleague website.  The recent inspectors report for Bedford prison states that it has a decline in standards, repeated poor assessments and increasing rate of assaults. Assaults on staff were also higher than other prisons and is the highest in the country. 116 Assaults on staff at Bedford Prison in the last 6 months alone.
