Altcourse Prison opened in 1997 and is a Category B Male Prison
Altcourse Prison was the first in the UK to be designed, built and financed by g4s. it not only houses male adults but also young offenders inside altcourse.
Altcourse prison has a capacity of over 1164 prisoners and is based in Liverpool, Merseyside. The prison was built by a construction company called Tarmac Construction and cost of £10 Million to make. In 2005, Altcourse was reported to be the most overcrowded prison in th UK.

What is Altcourse Prison like?
Firstly, Altcourse was the first privately owned, built and run prison in the UK by G4S and became fully operational in 1997 when it first opened its doors.
Secondly, Altcourse consists of various blocks for its accommodation including: Beechers Blue, Beechers Green, Canal Green and Blue, Foinavon Blue, Foinavon Green, Foinavon Red, Furlong Green, Furlong Red, Melling Blue, Melling Brown, Reynoldstown Brown and Blue and Finally Valentines Red and Green.
All the blocks have different purposes from Induction wing to general accommodation, family unit, vulnerable prisoner and RCU and Detox unit.
How to book a visit to Altcourse Prison?
Prisoners can book their own visits 14 days in advance and 3 days before the actual visit. They can have upto 3 adults and 3 children per visit. The visitors will have to be informed by the prisoner of their time and date of the visit.
