What is Cat D Prison like?

Coming from closed conditions where your doors always locked, not much freedom, lots of security and feeling like a caged animal to all of a sudden having a lot of freedom is completely overwhelming. Prisoners all work towards getting out of Cat B prisons to get to a Cat C and eventually all prisoners want to end up in a Cat D prison to see out the rest of their sentence. Doors are left unlocked, most have a key to their own door. You are free to wonder around the grounds for exercise after roll calls. The food is better, the officers treat you better and there are less of them. Finally, and the most important, you can access release on temporary licence to be able to go home and even get upto 5 days out of the prison each month.
